Taking a leaf out of European Union's success with a single currency, the leaders of the 14-nation Southern African Development Community have decided to review the ambitious plans to forge a free-trade zone and a common African currency.
The gathering of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) was attended by the presidents of South Africa, Botswana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Swaziland and Lesotho were represented by their prime ministers and senior ministers headed the other delegations.
Summit host South Africa said the meeting would be an opportunity to review progress and work out how to overcome obstacles.
